What makes a good web page?
This is the all-important question, and
can basically be broken down into 6 different
aspects:
- Content
- Organization
- Design
- Navigation
- Performance
- Credibility
|
Design
- Color
- Type
- Graphics
|
Color
- 3 or 4 colors per page (whitespace
is a color!)
- Carry colors throughout the site
- Use Web safe colors
- Use light backgrounds
|
Type
- Know the difference between serif
and sans-serif type
- No more than 4 different sizes
- Nor more than 3 ??? different faces
- Use sans-serif type for body text
|
Graphics
- Know the difference between a gif
and a jpg
- don't use too many graphics
- Ask yourself, "Why am I using
this graphic?"

General Design Dos and Don'ts
- Effective design or web page layout can
be summed up in three words, simplicity,
readability, and consistency.
- More is not necessarily better when
it comes to web page design.
- Avoid blinking or distracting graphics
or color combinations.
- Make use of white or empty areas.
- The goal is not to fill every nook
and cranny with info or graphics.
- Stick to simple - simple is good,
simple is easy, simple works.
- Dont ever add elements to your
website without a reason. Each element
needs a purpose whether it be to balance
your design, work as a heading or add
interest to your site. A good rule to
follow is If it looks good without
it, dont use it.
