What makes a good web page?

This is the all-important question, and can basically be broken down into 6 different aspects:

  1. Content
  2. Organization
  3. Design
  4. Navigation
  5. Performance
  6. Credibility

Design

  1. Color
  2. Type
  3. Graphics

Color

  • 3 or 4 colors per page (whitespace is a color!)
  • Carry colors throughout the site
  • Use Web safe colors
  • Use light backgrounds

Type

  • Know the difference between serif and sans-serif type
  • No more than 4 different sizes
  • Nor more than 3 ??? different faces
  • Use sans-serif type for body text

Graphics

  • Know the difference between a gif and a jpg
  • don't use too many graphics
  • Ask yourself, "Why am I using this graphic?"

General Design Dos and Don'ts

  • Effective design or web page layout can be summed up in three words, simplicity, readability, and consistency.
  • More is not necessarily better when it comes to web page design.
  • Avoid blinking or distracting graphics or color combinations.
  • Make use of white or empty areas.
  • The goal is not to fill every nook and cranny with info or graphics.
  • Stick to simple - simple is good, simple is easy, simple works.
  • Don’t ever add elements to your website without a reason. Each element needs a purpose whether it be to balance your design, work as a heading or add interest to your site. A good rule to follow is “If it looks good without it, don’t use it”.
